Although the Details of Genetics are Complex

Although the details of genetics are complex, the basis of these inherited characteristics is quite simple.

All the information needed for life is carried in the genes contained in each body cell. Most of that information is common to all mammals. The rest makes cats what they are, and us what we are.

The science of genetics began with Gregor Mendel (1822-1884), who showed that some traits are not diluted when crossed, but masked.

In 1953, Crick and Watson's modeling of DNA, the genetic storage system that is the basis of life, led to a new understanding of the influence of genetics on physical characteristics, emotional behavior, and disease.
