Breeds and Varieties

There are presently seven breeds of guinea pigs recognized by the American Cavy Breeders Association and the American Rabbit Breeders Association.

The animals are further classified by color, hair type, and hair length to determine the variety. A Standard of Perfection, which outlines the ideals for showing and breeding, can be ordered from the American Rabbit Breeders Association.

This Standard of Perfection exemplifies the type, fur, color, markings, and condition of each variety of guinea pig, as well as listing the faults and disqualifications for showing.

Although there are many varieties of guinea pigs, the best known and most readily obtainable are: the American short-haired, the Peruvian long-haired, and the Abyssinian rough-haired.
