As dogs grow older, the heart has to pump harder to make the circulation work efficiently. Inevitably, heart conditions may develop as a result.

Heart disease is the second most common cause of death in older dogs (after cancer), accounting for almost 23 percent of fatalities. Breeds such as Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and Doberman Pinschers are among the most susceptible.

If your dog has been diagnosed with a form of heart disease, discuss the necessary medication, diet, weight target, and exercise with your vet.

Regardless of the type of heart condition, there is evidence that a concentrated supplement of essential fatty acids found in marine fish oil  may be beneficial to the functioning of heart muscle.

Some veterinary schools now incorporate marine fish oil in their treatment of both heart and joint problems in dogs. This treatment is something you can discuss with your vet.
