Cats and People
Historically, cats have played a remarkably ambivalent role in human society.
Worshipped as beneficent gods in some cultures, they were castigated as the agents of evil in others, including Western Christianity.
In the last 150 years our relationship with the cat has changed dramatically.
Although in literature and art it is sometimes still equated with witchcraft and immorality, in the modern culture of advertising and entertainment the cat now represents sensuousness and refinement.
The great success of the cat in surpassing the dog as mans most popular animal companion in North America, Britain, and elsewhere is ample evidence of its universal appeal to modern sensibilities.
