Cleaning the Eyes, Nose, and Anus

Most felines have superb anatomy but human intervention has led to eye and nose problems in some breeds.

In the relatively flat-faced breeds, tears overflow and normal nasal secretions crust around the nostrils. Tear overflow produces a mahogany-colored discoloration to the hair around the eyes.

A cotton ball dampened with antiseptic eyewash solution can be used to remove excess tears, clean the nasal fold, and remove crust from the nostrils.

Consult your vet if your cat has a chronic tear overflow, or suffers from frequent sneezing or nasal discharge.

Excessive licking of the anal region indicates that the anal sacs are blocked. Your vet can show you how to empty impacted anal sacs manually.
