Clipped Horse Will Dry off Quickly

The clipped horse will dry off quickly if it does sweat up, which reduces the chance of it catching a chill.

The clipped horse is much easier to keep clean and is therefore labor saving, and it is also easy to spot any abnormalities such as swellings, heat, or injuries.

From a purely cosmetic view, many horses appear much smarter when clipped, rather than when wearing their hairy winter coats.

Clipping is mostly done in the winter, although occasionally a horse with a very thick natural coat may need to be clipped out during a hot summer if it is doing very fast work, such as eventing.

The first clip of the year is generally done around October when the winter coat is fully established, and a horse will probably need at least two, and sometimes three, clippings during the winter.

The final clip should not take place any later than the last week of January, otherwise it will affect the spring coat growing through.
