Demarcation Dispute
All the domestic cat's wild relatives create and defend their own distinct hunting and breeding territories.
When cats from adjacent territories meet at a demarcation point, potential injuries are avoided through displays of intent.
During the ritualized stage of a demarcation dispute, cats will arch their backs and bare their teeth, and their fur will bristle. They also stare each other down, until one cat turns its head and breaks eye contact.
It signals that it will withdraw, but any abrupt movement now provokes a lashing response from the victor. In domestic cat disputes, this is when the vanquished cat is bitten on its tail as it leaves the scene.
