There are some diseases that may affect both dogs and humans. The technical term for such a disease is "zoonosis".

The most feared of these diseases is undoubtedly rabies, the reason for long-standing quarantine laws between the United Kingdom and all other countries, which have only recently been changed.

The laws throughout the EU countries have now been dramatically relaxed for many domestic pets.

It is now possible to acquire a "pet passport", which allows owners to bring their pet into Britain without them spending six months in quarantine kennels, as the old laws used to require.
