Domesticated Guinea Pigs

Domesticated guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) differ from their wild relatives because of their rounder, plumper heads and bodies. They also come in an exceptionally wide variety of coat and color types.

In addition to being superb pets, guinea pigs are used extensively in research laboratories and hospitals. Their ease of care and ability to breed rapidly make them ideal for the study of heredity.

Many schools keep guinea pigs so that the children learn about caring for a dependent creature and experience firsthand the processes of life, growth, reproduction, and death.

Frequently, animal experts and enthusiasts correctly refer to guinea pigs as "cavies," (Remember that the name guinea pig is actually a misnomer.)

Even though "cavies" is the more accurate term, do not be surprised if the average person, even a pet shop employee, is not familiar with this name.
