Essential Supplies

From food and bedding to toys, there are essential items your new dog will need.

1. Puppy food
Continue feeding the food supplied by the breeder. Change gradually to your preferred food after your dog has settled in to your home.

2. Food bowl
Use nonslip ceramic or metal food and water bowls. Nonslip rubber bases are excellent. The best have sloped sides on the inside that are easy for a dog to lick clean.

3. A place to sleep
Molded plastic beds are relatively chewproof and easy to clean. Use washable bedding with zip-off covers that can be removed for cleaning.

4. Identification
Have an engraved ID tag ready, or a capsule ID container in which you write relevant details, including your home and cellular phone numbers.

5. Collar
Lightweight and inexpensive braided nylon collars are ideal for puppies. Wait until your dog is physically mature before investing in an attractive design.
6. Leash
Purchase a lightweight walking leash and also a long, lightweight houseline.

7. Toys
Select three toys at most that your dog can use to chew on, squeak, or pull.
