The food drops into a trough from which the animal can feed.
If water is provided in a bowl, your guinea pig may upset the dish, contaminate the water with food and droppings, or sit in the container.
To prevent these possibilities from occurring, offer the liquid in a gravity-flow water bottle with a metal tube. Since guinea pigs chew and tug at the end of the
tube instead of merely licking it, plastic is unsuitable and glass unsafe. Also, your guinea pig will blow water back up the tube, causing the contents to become slimy.
Freshen the water and disinfect the bottle daily. Once your guinea pig has settled in and developed a routine, monitor its food and water intake over a week.
An average adult eats about one third of a cup or two ounces of pellets and drinks roughly four to six ounces of water a day. In the future, you will be able to note any dietary changes that may indicate disease or injury.
