Kidney Filtration of the Blood

Kidney filtration of the blood works surprisingly well throughout the entire lives of most dogs, but for some it eventually falters.

Treatment 
Dogs with faltering filtration need to avoid phosphorus, which is found in protein. The earlier they are switched to low-phosphorus food, the longer they live.

They are first given a medium-protein, low-phosphorus diet and eventually moved to a low-protein, low-phosphorus diet.
