Lion and Tiger Hybrid
Lion and tiger have been crossbred in captivity, producing new hybrids referred to as "tigons" or "ligers".
The viability of mating snows how closely, in evolutionary terms, these two distinct species are related, but the fast that the offspring are usually sterile indicates the degree of divergence that has occurred within the cat family.
Infertile offspring
Like matings between the horse and the donkey that produce the sterile mule, the lion and tiger hybrid cannot breed.
