Many Horses Grow Long Whiskery Hair

Many horses grow long whiskery hair under the lower jaw and this can be trimmed away to make the whole head appear more attractive.

Long whiskers also grow on muzzles and chins, and often one or two long whiskers grow around the eyes. Some people trim these all off, though they may be left on.

Moving from the head to the mane, it is a good idea to keep the mane pulled; this is a necessity if you ire showing and need to braid the mane. Pulling involves shortening and thinning the mane.

First thoroughly comb the mane out then, starting at the poll end, separate a few hairs; take the pulling comb and push the shorter hairs up; wrap the longer hairs around the comb and quickly pull them out.

Try to pull the mane after the horse has exercised and is hot, as the pores will then be open and the mane will come out more easily. Only pull a few hairs out at a time and if the mane is very long and thick, pull it over several days.

Never use scissors to cut the length off the mane. There are several special mane pulling combs available now that have a cutting edge to them; they are rather more difficult than they look to use, and the traditional mane pulling method produces the best results.

After the mane has been pulled, you can carefully trim any straggly mane that may be growing over the withers and which gets in the way of the saddle and numnah.
