Several major traits in feline appearance have been identified (see list, right.) Dominant traits are notated in capitals, recessive traits in lower case.
A shorthaired cat is notated L unless test matings show it to be LL, because L needs to appear only once in an allele to show an effect, and the nature of the second gene in the pair usually remains unknown.
