Monitor Vital Signs

A cat's resting heart rate varies from 100 to 160 beats per minute. Kittens have heart rates up to 260 beats per minute. To detect the heartbeat, feel the chest firmly behind the elbows.

This is simple in lean cats but more difficult in plumper individuals. For those, feel the pulse in the thigh by gently pressing your fingertips into the slight groove inside the hind leg where it joins the body.

Examine the gums for color by gently lifting the upper lip. Normal gums are a healthy pink color, while bluish, pale, or white gums are all causes for concern.
