Musculoskeletal System

With age, muscles shrink and joints become less elastic. These processes can be slowed to some extent by good diet and care, and appropriate exercise remains important for both muscle tone and skeletal strength.

Painful Joints
The incidence of painful degenerative joint disease increases with time. Although any dog can develop painful joints, it is a problem that is more likely to occur in some breeds than in others.

Treatment
Medication alone is not the solution for joint pain. Reducing your dog's weight so that it returns to a healthy size - a size the skeleton was meant to carry - is vital.

Routine exercise is the best way to keep the muscles in fine tone: for dogs with joint pain, healthy muscles need to carry a lot of weight and so take the strain off inflamed joints.

Glucosamine sulfate and chondroitin supplements very likely nourish the joints and, when given chronically, reduce pain.
