Non - Sporting Group Dogs

The breeds in this group are not included within the others due to their unique appearance, historical roots, or characteristics. Some are excellent circus performers; others are better ratters than terriers, or have guard skills superior to those of the working breeds.

Poodles, loved the world over, have beautiful coats that can be uniquely sculpted and a high level of sweetness that equals that of the toy breeds. They are so intelligent, quick-learning, and well balanced that they have found a cherished place in circus performances.

Schnauzers have been bred into giant, standard, and miniature sizes—the miniature being a top-performing rodent hunter and the giant being an ever-alert, excellent guard dog.

The charming, pure white Japanese spitz is also a good guard dog. For sweetness, the French bulldog, Tibetan and Boston terriers, and Lhasa apso rate at the top of the list.

Dalmatians, admired for their spotted coats, and the noble chow chow are minimally barking guard dogs that few would challenge. The small schipperke makes an excellent sheepdog, while the Canaan dog is a military defense dog par excellence.

Bulldogs were originally bred to fight bulls, but they have been developed to be lovable companions. All of these breeds have qualities that enhance their owners' lives.
