Opening the Horse's Mouth

In fact, the most accurate way to age a horse, apart from knowing his birth date, is by looking at his teeth. This is, however, quite a skilled job, not least in managing to avoid getting bitten while trying to look in the mouth.

Do not attempt to do this unless you are under supervision, or have some experience with horses. If you do, do not stand in front of the horse, but position yourself to the side of his head.

Place your left hand on the upper lip under the nostrils, and your right hand under the jaw. To open the horse's mouth, insert the fingers of your right hand into the gap behind the incisors.

The horse should now open his mouth. Never grab the tongue as this can result in serious injury to the horse.
