Puppy Classes

Puppy classes are like preschool for children - an ideal environment for early learning and molding behavior. The best incorporate the following principles:

1. There is a restricted puppy age group, preferably under 16 weeks old.
2. The puppy's entire human family is encouraged to attend.
3. Free play takes place among selected groups of puppies.
4. Classes last about an hour, run for around six weeks, and cover a set curriculum.
5. The class is recommended by your veterinarian or the owner of a well-behaved dog.

When attending a puppy class, look for the following:

1. Classes should be closely supervised, including free play.
2. Children attending classes should also be closely supervised.
3. Brash puppies should not be allowed to intimidate shy ones.
4. Bold puppies should be selected for their own play group.
5. All classes should end on a positive note for puppies and their owners.
6. You should be sent home with homework to do before the next class.
