Scientific Testing
Scientific testing, developed for use in people, has now enabled breeders to have their puppies examined before sale, not only for total deafness, but for partial deafness in one or both ears.
There is evidence that partially deaf dogs can pass on partial or complete deafness to their offspring, and the numbers of dogs being tested are increasing rapidly in several countries. The test for dogs originated in the United States, which is probably leading the world m this area.
Almost certainly, present studies of the "genome", the genetic make-up, of all species will result in a revolution in the study and control of genetic diseases.
Once the precise positions of inherited diseases on the DNA molecule are known, specific action may be taken to eliminate the problem. This approach is no longer pie in the sky. Within a very few years DNA testing will become routine.
