Skin and Coats is Sometimes Underestimated
The sophistication and importance of the feline’s skin and coats is sometimes underestimated, because it seems inert to the naked eye.
The skin is the body's largest organ. The cells within it constantly carry out surveillance duty, warning of potential dangers, acting as waste managers, and even producing nutrients to maintain a variety of beneficial skin microbes and keep them healthy.
Regions of the skin are modified for specific purposes: paw pads for durability, claws for traction, and glands in the chin, lips, and anal area for scent marking. Hair growth is under a variety of external and internal controls.
