The best type of soil is the most nutritious soil, which holds enough water for plant life but which also drains efficiently.

One of the first things to consider is your type of soil: this determines what grasses grow best, how well your drainage works, and what effect the seasons will have on your field.

Grass grows best in soil with a 6.5 pH value, which is the measure of the soils acidity. This value is just on the acid side of neutral - neutral being 7.0 pH.
