Sugar Beet
Shreds should be soaked in ample water for at least 12 hours and cubes for 24 hours. Sugar beet is very high in fiber and is succulent and tasty; most horses will eat it with relish.
This can be bought in cubes or shreds. It must be soaked in water before being fed — this is vital, otherwise it swells in the stomach and causes severe colic.
Once it has been soaked, it should be fed straight away, otherwise it ferments and goes bad, a process which is greatly accelerated in hot weather. The soaking water must be discarded.
