Supplying Water

Do not situate your troughs next to the gateway or in a corner where horses can be bullied, and avoid placing them under trees.

If you have two fields sharing a fence line, it can be useful to place the trough midway along the fence so that the horses can access it from both sides.

A fresh clean water supply is essential. A natural ream is perfect, providing it comes from an unpolluted source, and has a firm standing on which the horse can stand.

A stagnant pond is not suitable, not is a stream with a sandy bottom. Self-filling troughs are good, but must be regularly cleaned, and the ice broken in winter.

Make sure that there are no sharp edges on the trough. Buckets work well providing the horse does not continually tip them up. Make sure that there are enough large buckets to provide plenty of water for all horses in the field.

Generally buckets are best used wheãå there are just a few horses. You should inspect the buckets or trough at least twice a day in the summer. If it is very hot, buckets need to be refilled during the day.
