The Skin and Hair Have Prosaic

The skin and hair have prosaic but significant, even life preserving, responsibilities.

The skin contains cells vital to the immune system; it is the cat's first  and most important line of defense, keeping harmful microorganisms or chemicals from entering the body.

Sensory functions are carried out by millions of nerve endings that detect heat, cold, pain, itches, and pressure.

A profusion of microscopic blood vessels, a far greater blood supply than is necessary simply to nourish the skin, forms a sophisticated thermodynamic system that helps a cat to regulate its body temperature when moving from a warm area to a cold one.

Skin secretes glandular substances that help rid the body of waste and help to protect against the harsh world outside, and also produces vitamin D, necessary for building sturdy bones.
