Vocal Communication
Although Studies are currently ongoing as to the importance of the voice in the horse, there is still little hard evidence as to the actual meaning of the different sounds.
The vocal range in the horse is relatively restricted, due to the close proximity in which the wild horse lives with its herd, and there is little need for extensive vocal communication.
There are four main types of voice in the horse: the nicker, the blow or snort, the squeal, and the whinny. AH these are used to 'say' different things — a nicker can be a call for food or a mating call; similarly, a snort can be a sign of fear or excitement.
