Working Dogs

This group consists principally of watchdogs, guard dogs, working dogs, police dogs, rescue dogs, and guide dogs. Many of the breeds in this group were selected from the particular abilities of the herding group.

Of universal popularity is the German shepherd, well known not only for its dedication as police dog, but also its work as service dog for the disabled, and, more recently, in detecting smuggled goods. Likewise brave, sturdy, tireless, and possessing a good memory are other police dogs such as the Doberman and boxer.

From olden times guard dogs were also full of bravery. While the master was away tending to livestock or hunting, guard dogs fiercely stood watch over the women and children and domesticated animals in the village, protecting them from burglars and wild animals.

In times of need, these courageous dogs with a strong sense of mission risked their lives to attack enemy humans or much larger animals. In wartime, they fought as four-legged soldiers. Their descendants were bred to become superior guard dogs.

German shepherds and Labrador retrievers work as search-and-rescue dogs to rescue people trapped in snow-covered mountains or in avalanches. Search-and-rescue dogs are also effective in times of earthquakes and other disasters.

In the polar region, the Samoyed, Alaskan malamute, and Siberian husky that can withstand the extreme cold and have incredible stamina are needed as sled dogs.
Other working dogs have pulled heavy loads in mountainous areas: the Briard, Bernese mountain dog, and Akita being examples.
